Zhang Baoping
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Male, Han ethnicity, born in April 1961 in Qinshui County, Shanxi Province. In 1973 he was admitted to the Southeast Shanxi branch of the Shanxi Provincial Art School, and after graduating he remained with the youth Shangdang Bangzi performance troupe formed by his graduating class. The troupe was later merged into the Southeast Shanxi Prefectural Shangdang Bangzi Company, where he became a disciple of the celebrated performer Hao Tongsheng and specialised in the xusheng role type. With solid basic training and a full, resonant voice, he has deepened his grasp of his characters' inner substance and his artistic expression while inheriting tradition; his stage appearance is dashing and handsome, his acting vivid and finely judged, and he is known as the foremost sheng performer of Shangdang Bangzi. His representative works include Sha Qi (Killing the Wife), Sha Xi (Killing Xi), Sanguan Paiyan (The Banquet at Sanguan), Chu Ding Zhongyuan (First Pacification of the Central Plains), Changping Beige (Elegy of Changping) and Zhao Shuli. He seizes every opportunity to create roles and new works for young performers and takes part in opera competitions, promoting innovation; year after year he leads his cast and crew through villages and rural communities, persisting in performing for ordinary audiences and using performance as training.
