He learned opera from his father Feng Huanqing from childhood and later studied under veteran artists such as Wu Zhiguo and Zhang Zilin.
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
In 1948 he studied the heitou (painted-face) craft, switched to the wusheng role type in 1953, and from 1956 also worked as a director. He directed and performed in Struggles in an Ancient City, Zhi Qu Guanfei Zuo Shandiao (Capturing the Habitual Bandit Zuo Shandiao), Flaming Mountain and Dui Hua Qiang (Duel of the Flower Spear), and recovered and arranged more than ten traditional plays, including Cuiping Shan (Mount Cuiping), Guan Gong Tiao Pao (Lord Guan Hangs Up His Robe), Dandao Hui (The Single-Sword Meeting), Luoyang Bridge, Tou Jizhou (The First Assault on Jizhou) and Hua Da Chao (The Flower-Bedecked Court). He mastered many traditional skills of the waibajiao repertoire and the distinctive body, finger, footwork and vocal techniques of several role types, and could carry a whole script - that is, take part throughout in everything from the script and vocal design to the performance - in more than one hundred plays.
Honors & Recognition
Male, Han ethnicity, born in August 1936 in Yangwu County, Henan Province, now part of Yuanyang County, and died in February 2019. National representative bearer of Yuju (Henan Opera), a third-batch national intangible cultural heritage project. He received the Outstanding Director Award at the third Henan Provincial Theatre Competition and the Henan Wenhua Grand Award at the twelfth Henan Provincial Theatre Competition. He trained more than one hundred disciples.
