In 1952 he became an actor in the Neixiang County Yuediao Troupe, and in 1959 he became a disciple of the celebrated veteran painted-face artist Du Linbao, specialising in the hualian (painted-face) role type. In 1979 he entered the second Henan Provincial directing refresher course, and in 1984 he was transferred to the Neixiang County Quju Troupe. His performance inherits the rugged traditional style of Wanbang while incorporating the graceful stage forms of Peking opera and Han opera, and he is accomplished in both civil and martial roles. His representative works include Zha Mei An (The Case of the Beheading of Chen Shimei), Shou Cen Peng (Capturing Cen Peng) and The Yellow Crane Tower. His disciples include Li Zhaoran, Zhou Chengshun, Yao Yulin, Wang Hongmei, Pang Yanli, Chang Shibo, Ma Rui and Yuan Xiaoke, many of whom have grown into leading pillars or principal performers of their companies.
Honors & Recognition
Male, Han ethnicity, born in March 1940 in Zhenping County, Henan Province, and died in May 2015. National representative bearer of Wanbang, a third-batch national intangible cultural heritage project. In 1992 he took part in the national showcase of outstanding productions by the Number One Troupe under Heaven companies and received an award for outstanding performance. The production Sanyuan Jinyue Bei (The Prohibition Stele of the Three Courtyards), which he helped to direct, won the gold medal at the seventh Henan Provincial Theatre Competition and the Henan provincial Five-One Project Award.
