Male, Han ethnicity, born in November 1963 in Heze City, Shandong Province. He holds the professional title of National First-Class Actor. A lover of opera from childhood, he was admitted in 1980 to the Heze County Dapingdiao Troupe (Heze County is now the Mudan District of Heze City), and in 1984 he became a disciple of Guo Shenggao, known as the King of Pingdiao (stage name Xiao Hei Niu, Little Black Ox). Through his teacher's instruction and example and through his own diligent effort, his artistic level rose substantially. His voice is round and clear, his diction distinct and his rhythm steady, plain and even. In lyrical passages he is tender and deep, in impassioned ones high and unrestrained; his physical bearing tends towards the bold and expansive without losing regularity, and he draws widely on the strengths of others while following tradition without being bound by it. His representative works include more than ten traditional plays such as Shou Jiang Wei (Capturing Jiang Wei), Fan Xuzhou (Rebellion at Xuzhou) and Yuanmen Zhanzi (Executing a Son at the Camp Gate), and he has successfully created characters in modern operas including Fa Hun (Soul of the Law) and Chai Xuejin.
Honors & Recognition
National representative bearer of Dapingdiao, a third-batch national intangible cultural heritage project. In 2000 he was awarded the title of Advanced Worker of the National Cultural System by the Ministry of Personnel and the Ministry of Culture of the People's Republic of China. In 2004 he won the gold award at the second China Opera Hongmei Singing Competition.
