Yanying Boxing
01 · Historical Records
It originated from the eagle-claw grappling art of Mr. Du Xinwu in the late Qing dynasty. His successors, drawing on many years of martial arts practice, distilled and imitated the fighting strengths and the fierce, agile nature of the rock eagles of the Hunan mountains, and through study and refinement developed it into a systematic style. It has a history of more than one hundred years to the present.
02 · Core Techniques & Process
Yanying Boxing is a boxing style unique to Xinning County, Shaoyang City, Hunan Province. Yanying Boxing is an imitative (xiangxing) style, modeling its movements on images of the rock eagle leaving its nest, foraging, soaring, hunting, killing, seizing, and fighting, which gives it a distinctly martial character. Its boxing routines are complete, comprising 4 sections and 82 forms, with smooth rhythm and an alternation of empty and full (xu and shi). The structure is sound and its features prominent, with emphasis on close-range combat and short, explosive power. In combat it uses stillness to check motion and speed to overcome slowness, striking after the opponent yet gaining the advantage first. Beyond its distinctive hooking, seizing, locking, and fastening hand techniques and its tendon-separating, bone-misaligning methods, it excels at low hook kicks and close-in striking. When practicing, the hands, eyes, body, and footwork coordinate rigorously. Internally, the focus is on intent (yi), qi, and force: the qi sinks to the dantian, qi propels force, and essence, qi, spirit, force, and skill are fused into one. Externally, the movements are swift and powerful, fast as lightning, with keen eyes and steel-like claws, clear alternation of motion and stillness, hardness and softness combined, and great variability. Every posture embodies the rock eagle's swiftness, power, and keen agility. Yanying Boxing's combat method uses stillness to check motion and speed to overcome slowness, striking after the opponent yet gaining the advantage first. Besides its distinctive hooking, seizing, locking, and fastening techniques and its tendon-separating, bone-misaligning hand methods, it is especially known for low hook kicks and close-in striking, making it suitable for close grappling in confined spaces. As a boxing style unique to Xinning County, it evolved from the eagle-claw grappling art of Mr. Du Xinwu in the late Qing dynasty: his successors, drawing on many years of martial arts practice, distilled and imitated the fighting strengths and the fierce, agile nature of the rock eagles of the Hunan mountains, and through study and refinement developed it into a systematic style with a history of more than one hundred years.
