Shanghai proverbs are one of the several famous dialect proverb collections of China. Their content touches such great categories as current affairs, cultivation, reasoning, social intercourse, life, local conditions, production and nature, full of the rich wisdom and general experience of the local people of successive ages. Here the administrative divisions were stable and the local people long held that in trade one does not go beyond Suzhou and Hangzhou and in office one always stays in the home town, forming a relatively closed cultural space. The local people's attitude to life is optimistic and their speech full of wit, and every village has not a few who can sing and tell well. Chenhang proverbs come from the life of the people; with very plain yet witty speech they condense the local ways and customs, comment on the good and evil, beauty and ugliness of the ways of the world, reflect each one's joys and sorrows and regulate neighbourhood relations, both rich in the distinctive charm of oral literature and highlighting the wisdom and virtue of the local people. Several generations of local leisurely inquirers into custom have made full and accurate records, making their transmission more orderly and profound.
