01 · Historical Records

Tancheng wood-turned toys originated in the Ming dynasty and have a history of more than five hundred years. According to the Fan family genealogy, Fan Mu, the seventh-generation ancestor of the Fan family, was the founder of wood-turned toys. Based on the principle of the hand-pulled drill, he created the wood-turning lathe and began making wood-turned toys; the craft has been passed down for fifteen generations to the present.

02 · Core Techniques & Process

Tancheng wood-turned toys, commonly known as 'shuahuo' (playthings), are named for the fact that most of their parts are turned on a lathe. They are traditional toys for children that combine folk painting with handicraft techniques. Tancheng wood-turned toys comprise five major categories and more than one hundred varieties: display pieces, rattling toys, push-and-pull toys, whirling and performance toys, and educational toys. Representative works include high-low stick figures, flower baskets, tiger-head wooden clubs, and swallow carts. Their forms are mainly spherical, cylindrical, ring-shaped, and conical. The main production tools include the first-generation wood-turning lathe invented by Fan Mu on the principle of the hand-pulled drill; the second-generation lathe, which added iron bearings to the transmission part of the original lathe; the third-generation lathe, which installed an electric motor on the traditional wooden lathe; and the present-day machines, all converted into industrial iron mechanical lathes. The colors are primarily red, green, and yellow—bright and strongly contrasted. The production process can be divided into material preparation, cutting to size, making the rough blank, sanding, priming, second sanding, painted decoration, and applying clear varnish.

03 · Regional Records & Related Items

The patterns on wood-turned toys are chiefly auspicious flowers and animal motifs such as dragons and phoenixes, peonies, chrysanthemums, lotuses, bats, and butterflies. The patterns on the hualabangchui (rattling club) are especially notable: known locally as 'hualabangchui flowers,' they resemble butterflies in flight as well as chrysanthemums in bloom.

04 · Cultural Value & Contemporary Safeguarding

Tancheng wood-turned toys originated and are mainly transmitted in Fannan Village, Gangshang Town, Tancheng County, Shandong Province, with influence radiating to northern Jiangsu, southern Shandong, and other surrounding areas; their sales have reached major temple fairs throughout the country. They embody the cultural character of rural southern Shandong and the superb artistic talent of folk artisans, and have folkloric research, artistic, and cultural value. The villagers of Fannan Village and the surrounding area have improved their lives through making and selling the toys, spread culture, and brought joy and intellectual stimulation to countless children.
