01 · Historical Records

Since modern times, with the introduction of Western industrial technology and foreign cultures, Lu embroidery has displayed the character of a Chinese-Western combination.

02 · Core Techniques & Process

Lu embroidery, also known as "Shandong embroidery" and "garment-thread embroidery", is the general name for the traditional embroidery crafts of the Shandong region, and is one of China's "eight famous embroideries". It traces its origins to the sericultural life of remote antiquity; its development has kept pace with the history of Chinese civilisation, and it mainly includes such varieties as Yantai tapestry-stitch embroidery, the traditional handicraft of Jimo lace, Gaoqiao hand embroidery, Wendeng Lu embroidery and the Wulian cut-flower technique. Lu embroidery takes the whole of Shandong as its core distribution area; the different varieties are concentrated in their respective places of origin and radiating areas, presenting a multi-centred pattern of distribution. Historically, Lu embroidery mostly used subtle-patterned fabrics of silk, gauze, satin, silk damask, cotton and hemp as its embroidery ground, and tussah silk thread, coloured plied silk thread and cotton thread as its embroidery threads; it employs a wide variety of stitches — the satin stitch, chain stitch, French knot, roll stitch, suohe stitch, zhen stitch (braided-strand stitch) and joining stitch among them — and selects subjects beloved of the people such as figures, mandarin ducks, butterflies and hibiscus flowers, making flat embroidered works of traditional themes by hand with embroidery hoops. It draws on the strengths of the famous embroidery schools and has absorbed European embroidery techniques, creating process techniques of "interlacing, mending, locking, picking, couching, embroidering, drawn-work and carving"; on the basis of continuing the traditional techniques it has constantly innovated, introducing machine embroidery, long-stitch embroidery and tapestry stitch, enriching the system of stitches; it introduced hair embroidery, broadening the range of embroidery grounds and materials; its artistic style has absorbed various schools, and its colour matching, figurative modelling and thematic composition all display a distinctly contemporary artistic effect. Its embroidered works cover a wide range, from practical everyday dress to ornamental works of calligraphy and painting; the style is plain and forthright, bold and unrestrained, vigorous and robust, strong within softness, with open, clear texture, a solid and substantial quality and sharp colour contrast, combining magnificence with refined simplicity. The embroidered works display diverse regional characteristics: for example, Wendeng Lu embroidery takes the Chinese-Western combination as its typical feature, Wulian cut-flower work emphasises symmetry, fullness and brilliant colour, and Gaoqiao hand embroidery focuses on "inserting flowers and outlining clouds". Among the people, Lu embroidery has been passed down from generation to generation through relatives, neighbours and friends, mothers and sisters, and master-apprentice transmission. Lu embroidery has a long history and is an important means of understanding the sericulture, silk-weaving and cotton-spinning techniques of the Shandong region. Its embroidered works are widely used in daily life; the patterns are exquisite and the designs archaic, possessing both practical value and bringing people artistic enjoyment.

The five branches of Lu embroidery

The umbrella term covers Yantai velvet work, Jimo lace, Gaoqiao hand embroidery, Wendeng Lu work and Wulian cutwork, each centred on its own home district.

Its stitch vocabulary

Silk, satin, cotton, hemp and ramie grounds stitched with tussah and cotton thread in running, wrapped, seed, rolling, scattered and braided stitches.

Six techniques combined

Drawing on the great embroideries and on European technique, Lu work developed braiding, patching, lacing, picking, outlining and stitching, and became distinctly Sino-Western in the modern period.

Mandarin ducks, butterflies and hibiscus

Figures, mandarin ducks, butterflies and hibiscus worked on a hoop were the common subjects, used at weddings and festivals to wish for union.

Five branches, many centres

Five branches spread across several Shandong centres, each concentrated in its own home district rather than a single capital.

The hoop and the figured ground

Dark-patterned silks and linens on a hoop, worked in tussah and cotton thread, produced the flat traditional pieces of the past.

Braiding, patching, lacing, picking, outlining and stitching

Borrowing from the great embroideries and from European technique, these six methods made Lu work both Sino-Western and nationally ranked.

The development of related industries has also contributed to promoting inclusive economic development locally and advancing rural revitalisation.

04 · Cultural Value & Contemporary Safeguarding

The development of related industries has contributed to promoting inclusive economic development locally and advancing rural revitalisation. The value of Lu embroidery lies precisely in its transformation of "women's work" (nügong) from personal household labour into local knowledge that can be transmitted, sold and exhibited: the Shandong Arts and Crafts Association has taken Lu embroidery as its guiding framework, bringing the five techniques of Yantai tapestry stitch, Jimo lace, Gaoqiao hand embroidery, Wendeng Lu embroidery and Wulian cut-flower into a single system of transmission and presentation, and has promoted the exchange of apprentices between coastal and inland embroiderers, so that this multi-centred pattern of distribution, with the whole of Shandong as its core, has been linked up.
