01 · Historical Records

Ceramic micro-calligraphy is the product of micro-calligraphy meeting painted porcelain. The art of micro-calligraphy takes writing tiny characters with the naked eye as its ultimate expression. In the Chaoshan area, commerce and handicrafts were highly developed, and the demand for writing media beyond paper and brush gradually grew; micro-calligraphy thus shifted from paper and silk to the porcelain surface. Porcelain, being durable for storage, displayable, and giftable, was exactly suited to carry such fine and dense writing. The Shantou-area recorded micro-calligraphy master Zhang Shengdian, whose ceramic micro-calligraphy work The Zhang Family Manuscript, eleven volumes totaling over 1.5 million characters, can be regarded as representative of the fruitful results this craft bore locally.

02 · Core Techniques & Process

Micro-calligraphy, that is, miniature calligraphy, is an ancient artistic genre in which the artist uses a brush as the writing tool and writes relying on naked-eye vision, remarkable for its tiny characters. Ceramic micro-calligraphy is a traditional craft that creatively combines miniature calligraphy with painted-porcelain art. In the process of creating ceramic micro-calligraphy, the artist writes Chinese characters the size of a needle's head on the porcelain, composes and colors according to different vessel shapes, either forming pictures from characters or pairing characters with pictures—from afar it is a painting, up close it is writing, complementing each other amusingly. It emphasizes selecting porcelain plaques, vases, plates, pots, and cups whose qualities are close to the mood of the expressed content. According to the artistic form of the work and the material of the carrier, it selects writing brushes of different sizes made from a mix of wolf-hair and goat-hair as writing tools, and develops inks suitable for writing on porcelain glaze surfaces and various high-temperature-resistant colorants. The core element of ceramic micro-calligraphy lies in writing needle-head-sized calligraphy on the ceramic with the naked eye, emphasizing that the micro-calligraphy work and landscape ink painting complement each other pleasingly; it is created on the ceramic and then finished by a second kiln firing, applying the Chaoshan painted-porcelain techniques of outlining, filling, and washing to blend the techniques of Chinese painting with porcelain painting. Ceramic micro-calligraphy works, seen from afar, are sculptural art; seen close up, are planar art; and seen finely, are composed of countless Chinese-character calligraphies, integrating poetry, calligraphy, painting, and porcelain into one. Since ancient times, Shantou has had a profound craft-culture foundation, long renowned for fine, meticulous carving. Chaozhou City is honored as the "Porcelain Capital of China" and abounds in painted porcelain, providing favorable conditions for the emergence of ceramic micro-calligraphy. Yet because micro-calligraphy creation requires the unity of mind and hand, recorded micro-calligraphy masters are very rare. The recorded micro-calligraphy master in the Shantou area is Zhang Shengdian, whose ceramic micro-calligraphy work The Zhang Family Manuscript comprises eleven volumes and more than 1.5 million characters. Ceramic micro-calligraphy has extraordinary aesthetic significance, creatively merging the arts of micro-calligraphy and ceramics; its craftsmanship is exquisite, displaying the microcosmic beauty of China's millennia-long cultural lineage, and by selecting classical literary works as content plays an important role in disseminating Chinese culture.

Needle-point characters and the second firing

The characters are written by naked eye with no aid, and the finished piece must be fired a second time so the writing fuses with the glaze and does not rub off; the smaller the vessel, the tighter the choice of size and blank space.

Characters forming pictures, characters accompanying pictures

The board, vase, dish, pot or cup is chosen to suit the intended mood; characters may be arranged to form the picture themselves, or form the skeleton while colour fills in the landscape around them.

The long-hand micro-script Zhangshi Shouji

Zhang Shengdian is known for an eleven-volume micro-script work of more than 1.5 million characters, which tests steadiness and patience rather than inspiration, since every character must match in size and the curve of the vessel accounted for.

Micro-script Sanguozhi on an arrow quiver

Wang Zhiwen wrote the Sanguozhi on an arrow quiver, earning a Guinness World Record; the narrow curved surface compresses the characters and forces the columns to follow the curve of the tube.

03 · Regional Records & Related Items

The core of the transmission and development of ceramic micro-calligraphy is in Shantou City; the Chaozhou and Jieyang area, with its complete range of painted-porcelain categories, took on this craft, and Zhuhai and other places also have it passed down. The Shantou Arts and Crafts School is the main institution for cultivating micro-calligraphy artists in the modern era; Wang Zhiwen entered the school in 1983, stayed on to teach after graduation, first learning Chaoshan-painted-porcelain techniques from Cai Yongqing and Liu Zaisheng, then turning to the micro-calligraphy line. The brushes paired with micro-calligraphy are selected according to the work's form and the carrier's material, and the ink and colorants must also be compounded by oneself.

04 · Cultural Value & Contemporary Safeguarding

The core region for the transmission and development of ceramic micro-calligraphy is Shantou City, Guangdong Province, with key distribution in Chaozhou City, Jieyang City, and Zhuhai City of Guangdong Province, among other places. With the change in modern lifestyles, keyboard input brought by information technology has overturned many people's ways of communication and learning, and its impact on Chinese-character writing is especially pronounced, also affecting the transmission of ceramic micro-calligraphy. At present this craft is transmitted through the master-apprentice method. Ceramic micro-calligraphy holds high historical-cultural value and artistic-aesthetic value, and is a precious heritage of traditional Chinese craftsmanship.
