01 · Historical Records

The Muniziqi-Musili decoction comes from the Ilaj (treatment) doctrine of Uyghur medicine and is an indispensable step before the treatment of diseases of humoral temperament imbalance. Uyghur medicine is rooted in the vast land of the Western Regions; over several centuries the Uyghur people, struggling against illness in their long life of production, have continuously refined a relatively complete and distinctive traditional medical theory system. Its treatment principle is to adjust the temperament and balance the humors; since pathogenic humors must first mature before they can be cleared, this sequence is the basis for the separation of the Muniziqi and Musili medicinals. The prescribed medicinals are first soaked in cold or hot water for several hours, then heated and boiled into a decoction for oral administration; the method is simple yet everywhere accords with the theory of the humors, and is therefore applicable to all diseases of humoral temperament imbalance discussed in Uyghur medicine.

02 · Core Techniques & Process

Uyghur medicine is the traditional medicine of the Uyghur people. Uyghur medicine is rooted in the vast land of the Western Regions; over several centuries the Uyghur people, struggling against illness in their long life of production, have summed up the essence of Uyghur medicine and continuously refined a relatively complete and distinctive traditional medical theory system. The treatment principle of Uyghur medicine — adjusting the temperament and balancing the humors — is the fundamental principle of clinical treatment. The Muniziqi decoction (a maturing agent for pathogenic humors) — Musili decoction therapy is one of the treatment methods in the 'Ilaj' (treatment) doctrine of Uyghur medicine, referring to a treatment method applied first, before treating diseases of humoral temperament imbalance, in order to bring the pathogenic humors to maturity. Muniziqi decoction (maturing agent for pathogenic humors) — Musili decoction (clearing agent for pathogenic humors): the medicinals in the prescription are soaked in cold (or hot) water for several hours, then heated and boiled into a decoction and taken orally. Uyghur medicine is applied mainly among the Uyghur people, and is also used by the Han, Kazakh, Kyrgyz, Tajik, and Hui peoples, among others. The Uyghur technique for preparing the Muniziqi-Musili decoction is simple and convenient to use, and is suited to the treatment of all diseases of humoral temperament imbalance in Uyghur medicine.

Munizzi: the maturing agent

Munizzi is the maturing agent applied before the purgative step so that the pathogenic humour is made ready for removal.

Musili: the evacuating agent

Musili evacuates the matured humour, showing that Uighur medicine tempers the physiology before expelling the excess.

Soaking for hours then decocting

The drugs are soaked for hours in cool or hot water, then decocted and taken orally; insufficient soaking leaves the medicine unreleased.

Adjusting temperament and balancing humours

Adjusting temperament and balancing humours is the root principle, and the decoction method arranges sequence and combination accordingly.

Use beyond the Uighur community

Beside Uighur patients, Han, Kazakh, Kirghiz, Tajik and Hui people also use these remedies across Xinjiang.
