Guiyue Customs
01 · Historical Records
The Lü Family Community Compact, created by the Lü brothers of Lantian, Shaanxi, in the Northern Song dynasty, is one of the earlier written community compacts in Chinese history. According to the History of Song, Qiao Village was the renowned residence of the Lü family in the Northern Song period. Lü Dajun, one of the founders of the Guan School of learning, in order to improve local customs and popular mores, drew up the articles of the Community Rules and Community Etiquette with the assistance of his brothers Lü Dazhong, Lü Dafang and Lü Dalin, and led his fellow villagers in putting them into practice. Later it was revised and advocated by the great Southern Song Confucian Zhu Xi, and was transmitted through the Ming-dynasty neo-Confucian scholar Wang Zhishi, the late-Qing representative figure of the Guan School Niu Zhaolian, and successive generations of Lü lineage descendants, being continually practiced in the local villages.
02 · Core Techniques & Process
In ancient China, the community compact stood between state law and family rules: it denotes a covenant made within the local community for common observance, an important form of traditional Chinese village self-governance that played a significant role in rural administration. The Lü Family Community Compact consists of two main parts: the community compact and the community etiquette. The community compact has four main parts: "encouraging one another in virtue and endeavor," "correcting one another's faults," "courtesy and customs in mutual intercourse," and "relieving one another in misfortune." Villagers join the compact organization voluntarily and abide by the covenant; a regular meeting system is established, members' good deeds and misdeeds are published, matters within the compact are deliberated, and a compact director (yuezheng) and monthly duty officer (zhiyue) are elected and appointed to oversee supervision and matters of reward and punishment. For a thousand years, educated and influenced by the Lü Family Community Compact, the area around Sanli Town has formed a popular ethos and customs that esteem ritual propriety, value filial piety and cultivate virtue, and hold neighbors in mutual respect, being famed far and wide. Since the reform and opening up, compact culture has seen new developments: Qiao Village has established a deliberative council for popular regulations and covenants, which helps mediate disputes between neighbors and assesses villagers' morality and family conduct.
The four articles of the covenant
The covenant rests on encouraging virtue, correcting faults, maintaining proper intercourse and sharing in misfortune, two inward and two outward.
The covenant officer and the month stewards
A covenant officer and rotating monthly stewards handle oversight and reward or penalty, the rotation preventing any one man from ruling alone.
Rites of congratulation, condolence and occasion
The ceremonial part is grouped into respect for elders, paying visits, seeing guests off, and offering condolences or congratulations, divided into fifteen, four, two and two items.
Periodic meetings and the posting of deeds
Members join voluntarily, meet at fixed intervals and have the good and bad deeds of each published, so that public record itself serves as sanction.
The village covenant tribunal today
A modern village tribunal now mediates disputes and assesses moral conduct, carrying on a covenant whose articles are unchanged but whose setting has shifted.

The community-etiquette part is expressed chiefly in four respects: "seniority and precedence between elders and juniors," "calls upon others and bowing salutations," "invitations, summons, and welcoming and seeing off guests," and "congratulations, condolences, and presentation of gifts"; it comprises 15 items of guest etiquette, 4 items of auspicious ritual, 2 items of felicitation ritual and 2 items of funeral ritual. The Lantian County Cultural Center has organized dedicated personnel to excavate, collect and collate materials on the Lü Family Community Compact, established transmission-and-practice bases, and hosted experts, scholars and Lü lineage kin to jointly explore the role of the Lü Family Community Compact in contemporary rural construction and development. The Lü Family Community Compact translates Confucian ethical norms into concrete rules of conduct, exerting their social effect through the forms of ritual propriety; this is embodied concretely in education and local governance, and the compact is typical, demonstrative and practical.
