Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire

Female, of Han ethnicity, born in December 1942 in Beijing. A national first-class actor and an expert receiving the special government allowance of the State Council. In 1959 she was admitted to the trainee class of the China Pingju Opera Theatre. In 1960 she was assigned to the second troupe of the China Pingju Opera Theatre, and she once took over from Xiao Baiyushuang in the role of Gao Xia in Shenghuo de Kaige (Song of Life). In 1978 she took part in the revival of Qin Xianglian, which has remained long in the repertoire. Building on the tradition of the Bai school, she has developed it further: her singing is low, lingering and sweet, rich in flavour, and combines voice and emotion. The operas in which she excels are mostly qingyi (virtuous female lead) roles and tragedies. In 2016 she accepted Wang Ping as her disciple.

Honors & Recognition

Representative bearer of Pingju Opera, a third-batch national intangible cultural heritage project. In 1984 she won the second China Drama Plum Blossom Award for her portrayal of Bai Yushuang in Pingju Huanghou (The Queen of Pingju).
