Gao Guizhi
01 · Lineage & Regional School
In 1953 she became a student of Liu Weisheng, a celebrated veteran artist of Quju Opera, specializing in the huadan and qingyi roles. Within the regional tradition and school record of Qu Opera in Henan: Quju is the second largest genre in Henan; outside Henan it is also distributed in Shaanxi, Shanxi, Hebei, Hubei, Anhui, Jiangsu and other provinces. Henan quju, also called 'gaotai qu' (high-platform qu), developed and took formal shape around the 1920s on the basis of Henan quzi melodies and the performance of stilt-walking (caigaoqiao).

Female, Han ethnicity, born in February 1940 in Luoyang, Henan Province. An expert receiving the special government allowance of the State Council. Under Liu Weisheng's guidance she inherited such plays as Gui Zhong Yuan (Romance in the Cabinet). In 1953 she was admitted to the Luoyang Prefectural Literary and Art Training Class, which was named the Henan Luoyang Opera School in 1978 and renamed the Henan Luoyang Culture and Art School in 1986. In 1956 she went to study at the Henan Provincial Opera School, integrating the characteristics of Quju Opera from the Luoyang and Zhengzhou regions. In performing modern plays she is adept at capturing the personality traits of her characters, blending everyday movement into traditional conventions. 03 · Transmission & Safeguarding Status
She is a representative bearer of Quju Opera, a third-batch national intangible cultural heritage project. In 1992 she won the Outstanding Performance Award at the First China Opera Golden Triangle (Shaanxi, Shanxi and Henan) Exchange Performances. Her disciples Xiang Ying, Chen Milin and Huang Dehua are now leading performers at the Henan Provincial Quju Opera Art Protection and Transmission Centre and other institutions.
