Yu Zhanggen
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
A man of Han ethnicity, he was born in 1932 in Shengzhou, Zhejiang. He is a national representative bearer of Shengzhou Bamboo Weaving, a first-batch national intangible cultural heritage project, and a Master of Chinese Arts and Crafts. Yu Zhanggen learned bamboo weaving from his father at the age of eight; in 1950 he entered a newly founded bamboo-weaving enterprise to work in the craft; and in 1958 he transferred to the Shengxian Craft Bamboo Weaving Factory, where he successively served as head of the innovative design group and as director of the research institute until his retirement. Yu Zhanggen has now practiced his art for more than sixty years. He commands all the weaving techniques of the bamboo-weaving art, working with equal ease in coarse and fine grades; at the finest, he can weave 150 bamboo strips into a single inch, so exquisite and delicate that the result is as thin as a cicada's wing. At the same time, he has created more than ten new weaving techniques. He has designed and woven more than two hundred kinds of bamboo products over the years, and he was the first to create woven bamboo animal figures. Together with his apprentices he published two technical handbooks, Bamboo Weaving Craft (Zhubian Gongyi) and Bamboo Weaving (Zhubian). His representative works include Jiushi Wu Xiuqiu (Nine Lions Dancing with an Embroidered Ball), Magu Xianshou (Magu Offering Longevity), and Qun Ji (A Flock of Chickens).
