Hu Guoqing

Male, of Han ethnicity, born in May 1952 in Gu'an County, Hebei Province. He has a thorough knowledge of the repertory of the yinyue hui, or ritual wind ensemble, and performs with consummate skill. He has mastered the techniques of percussion instruments including the cymbals (cha), large cymbals (nao), gezi, dangzi, and drums, and can play every piece extant in the ensemble's repertory. He is thoroughly proficient in flute techniques such as single tonguing, double tonguing, triple tonguing, vibrato, and portamento, and works in close rapport with the other musicians of the ensemble. When the ensemble changes keys in performance, he accomplishes the modulation by flexibly altering fingerings rather than, in most cases, changing instruments. His principal repertory includes Qi Yan Hui (Weeping for Yan Hui), Da Liangzhou, Pu'an Zhou (Incantation of Pu'an), Xiao Hua Yuan (Small Flower Garden), and Yu Fu Rong (Jade Hibiscus), as well as the percussion suite Fa Qi and short pieces such as Kaitan Heqi (Opening the Altar in Harmony), Qing Heqi (Pure Harmony), and Heqi Po (The Harmony Woman). He serves as president of the Qujiaying Yinyue Hui.
Honors & Recognition
He is a representative bearer of Central Hebei Sheng and Guan Ensemble Music (Qujiaying Yinyue Hui), a fourth-batch national intangible cultural heritage project. In 2000 he received a silver award at the National Qunxing Awards.
