Dongzhangwu village lies in Luofa Town, Anci District, Langfang City, Hebei Province; the music society current in this village is Buddhist music of the Chan Linji and Caodong schools transmitted together, brought from the temples into the folk at the end of the Qing dynasty. In the Boxer Movement the Dongzhangwu village set up its altar in 1900, and the music society joined in and played a positive part in it.

02 · Core Techniques & Process

Besides wind instruments such as the sheng, guan and flute, Jizhong sheng-and-guan music also uses such percussion instruments as cloud gongs, drums, nao, cymbals and clapper bells. The pieces of sheng-and-guan music fall into three kinds: suites, short pieces and independent sets of percussion music; of these the suites are of great length and complex structure, and form the main part of the whole performing repertory. The repertory of the Dongzhangwu music society is very rich, the most important of it being such famous Buddhist pieces as San Gui Zan, Pu An Zhou and Wang Sheng Zhou. The musicians created pieces such as Shang Ma Tai, E Lang Zi, Pu Ma Zha and Ku Huang Tian to suit the situation of the time, in support of the development of the Boxer Movement. It is particularly worth noting that the musicians of the Dongzhangwu music society once went into battle with the music playing at the Luoha blocking action, so that ancient Buddhist music, as the military music of the Boxers, was drawn into the fighting against the invaders and wrote a stirring and mournful song of Chinese farmers defending national dignity with their own bodies and resisting foreign aggression. In order to commemorate the martyrs and carry forward the patriotic spirit, the Boxer music society of Dongzhangwu preserved these pieces well and plays them on festivals and in the slack season. The Dongzhangwu Boxer music society has more than twenty members today, its instruments are complete, and it can perform skillfully more than thirty pieces.
