He was steeped in ancient music from childhood and in 1994 studied the wenchang (civil ensemble) repertoire under Wang Zhixin. He has a thorough command of musical notation and applies the da, dian, hua, she and tu techniques of the wenchang guan with complete facility.
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Male, Han ethnicity, born in February 1966 in Xiong County, Hebei Province. In performance he draws several notes from a single finger-hole and different notes from the same hole, combining high and low registers in great variety; his melodies are refined and his tone beautiful, now as unrestrained as a river in spate, now as soft as a whispered phrase, now as clear as birdsong or the chirping of cicadas. In the wuchang (martial ensemble) his flower-cymbal playing, created by drawing on the strengths of many schools, is intricate in pattern, majestic in momentum, high and spirited, bold and expansive, and has won praise from specialists and veteran artists. His main representative works include Kongzi Tan Yan Hui (Confucius Visits Yan Hui), Xiao Hua Yuan (The Small Garden) and Tao Jun Ling (Demanding the Military Order).
Honors & Recognition
Representative bearer of Jizhong Sheng and Guan Ensemble (Xiong County Ancient Music), a fifth-batch national intangible cultural heritage project. He is currently chairman of the Yagucheng Music Society and has trained more than twenty disciples.
