Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire

Artistic name Guan Sumei; female, Manchu, born in June 1956, a native of Xinbin Manchu Autonomous County, Liaoning Province. She began learning paper-cutting at the age of five or six and received the true transmission of her mother, Jin Yazhen; her works have a distinct Manchu character. When cutting she neither traces nor draws nor uses a draft, and she carries on the traditional Manchu habit of singing and telling old stories while cutting. Her works are rich in type, including three-dimensional composite, hanging, coloured collage, pine-torch smoking and fire-branding styles; the forms are simple and distinctive, the subjects mostly Manchu sacrificial rites, fishing, hunting and archery, and besides paper she uses leather, hemp cloth and birch bark. She has taken part many times in paper-cutting exhibitions in various places and has opened classes in her home town to take on apprentices and pass on her skills.
