01 · Historical Records

Jianping lies in western Liaoning and is an important area of the Liaohe civilization, with prehistoric remains such as the Niuheliang Hongshan culture sites distributed within its borders. Local papercutting has been passed down among the people for generations, mostly attached to New Year and festival customs, weddings, and funerals. Its dragon, phoenix, fish, and lotus motifs subtly correspond with the forms of unearthed jade objects, providing vivid circumstantial evidence for the study of local culture in western Liaoning.

02 · Core Techniques & Process

Jianping papercutting starts with symmetrical folding, uses both positive and negative cutting, and has plain yet forceful lines, solid heavy areas, and a bold, generous style. Common subjects include dragons, phoenixes, fish, lotus, peonies, hair-grasping dolls, and various auspicious beasts, mostly chosen for auspicious wordplay, with emphasis on full and symmetrical composition.

The dragon with pig head, deer antlers, snake body, fowl claws and phoenix tail

Some Jianping motifs match the jade pig-dragon from Hongshan sites; Zhu Ruilian's Dragon and Pearl keeps the traditional dragon made of pig head, deer antlers, snake body, fowl claws and phoenix tail.

Zhu Ruilian and Dragon and Pearl

The local cutter Zhu Ruilian's Dragon and Pearl preserves the archaic dragon formula, a textbook case of the ancient forms kept in Jianping cutting.

Formal echoes of the Hongshan remains at Niuheliang

In Jianping, cradle of Liaohe civilisation, the painted pottery and jades of Niuheliang resemble the cutting's forms, hinting at an inherited connection.

Folded symmetry and positive-negative cutting

Folded work yields paired motifs at a stroke; positive and negative cutting combine into full, symmetrical compositions of plain, sturdy lines.

03 · Regional Records & Related Items

Some motifs of Jianping papercutting have highly distinctive forms, coinciding directly with the shapes of pig-dragons and other jades unearthed at Hongshan culture sites. In "Dragon Playing with a Pearl" by Zhu Ruilian, a well-known Jianping papercutting artist, the dragon is treated in the traditional style of a pig's head, deer antlers, snake body, chicken claws, and phoenix tail. Jianping papercutting circulates widely in the towns and countryside of the county. Its creators are mainly rural women, who generally do their concentrated cutting during the agricultural off-season and around New Year and festivals. Besides decorating window paper and walls, the works are also used for wedding joy flowers and funerary paper effigies; their uses are closely tied to local ritual customs.

04 · Cultural Value & Contemporary Safeguarding

Jianping papercutting is popular in Jianping County, Liaoning Province, the principal birthplace of the Liaohe civilization. The painted pottery and jade objects unearthed at the Niuheliang Hongshan culture site are quite similar to Jianping papercutting in their modeling approach and external features, faintly revealing a latent relationship of cultural transmission. Jianping has since ancient times been a vast land with a sparse population. Although several nomadic peoples passed through it in history, major historical changes left little impact there. As an important carrier of multi-ethnic local culture, Jianping papercutting has therefore maintained relatively stable subjects and styles, preserving some ancient cultural information, and has extremely important reference value for the study and interpretation of local history and culture. Due to changes in the modern living environment, few among Jianping's younger generation have taken an interest in papercutting. At present only a small number of people are transmitting the Jianping papercutting craft, and its collective strength cannot be brought into play. Jianping papercutting is already in an endangered state, and protective measures must be taken urgently. The archaeological discoveries at the Niuheliang site have drawn greater attention to the ancient forms of Jianping papercutting. Local cultural departments have combined papercutting surveys with cultural relic censuses and have successively collected a number of traditional patterns.
