Zhao Zhiguo
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Male, of Han ethnicity, born in 1956, a native of Jinzhou, Liaoning. Influenced from childhood by his parents, who made shadow-puppet figures, cut window flowers, and made wall hangings, he developed a deep love of paper-cutting, and at every New Year and festival he cuts and carves a large number of paper-cut works. His paper-cutting is strongly realistic in character, drawing its subjects from scenes of seaside life in his hometown of Linghai; it is bold and natural, free of petty constraint, humorous and charming, plain and unforced; he does more carving than cutting with the scissors, handles the contrast of black and white with good judgment, does not pursue detail excessively, and gives priority to vivid expression. His representative works include Ancient Warriors (Gudai Wushi), A Mouse Steals an Egg (Laoshu Toudan), and In the Twelfth Lunar Month (Layue Li); some of his works have been included in the Record of Famous Chinese Folk Artists (Zhongguo Minjian Yishu Mingren Lu), compiled by the Ministry of Culture.
