Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Male, of Han ethnicity, born in 1926, a native of Yueqing, Zhejiang. A national representative bearer of paper-cutting (Yueqing fine-line paper-engraving), a first-batch national intangible cultural heritage project, and a master of Chinese arts and crafts. Lin Bangdong is bold in exploration and adept at innovation; he expanded the originally monotonous geometric patterns to include flowers, plants, birds, and beasts, as well as landscapes and human figures, making the art more vivid and lively, with well-proportioned density and spacing, imparting a strong sense of rhythm and cadence, and endowing it with a distinctly folk, customary, and regional character. He can engrave more than 2,000 holes on a tiny square inch of paper, work of almost supernatural craftsmanship. His representative works include Fish Leaping over the Dragon Gate (Yuyue Longmen), The Six Domestic Animals Thrive (Liuchu Xingwang), and A Chart of One Hundred Longevities (Baishou Tu).
