Wang Xiuxia
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Female, of Manchu ethnicity, born in 1947, a native of Jinzhou, Liaoning. Wang Xiuxia possesses extraordinary artistic talent; from the age of four she learned paper-cutting from her mother, and after her marriage she came into contact with a great deal of Khitan shamanic culture. Her paper-cutting takes as its principal content the Manchu people's primitive worship of nature deities, of ancestor deities, and of reproduction and fertility, and her art accordingly possesses the value of historical source material for the study of shamanic culture. Wang Xiuxia's works are composed freely and unrestrainedly, full and flowing, and brimming with strange and marvelous imagination; her representative works include Mother Willow (Liushu Mama), the Mountain God (Shanshen), and A Shaman Takes Office (Saman Chuma). In 2004 she participated in the China Jinzhou Yiwulu Mountain Manchu Paper-cutting Exhibition held by the Beijing Folk Customs Museum, and all her exhibited works were collected by that museum.
