Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Female, of Han ethnicity, born in August 1935 in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province. She is a senior arts and crafts artist and a Master of Chinese Arts and Crafts. She is accomplished in random-stitch embroidery and has persistently studied and applied its different methods; by setting thick and fine lines against one another she gives random-stitch work the artistic effect of revealing three-dimensional form through solid and void, and of disclosing the subject through the interplay of fine random and extreme random stitching. From the 1970s she worked mainly on portrait embroidery, chiefly in random stitch, and from the 1980s she embroidered a number of portraits of foreign leaders. Her more than twenty portrait embroideries employ a rich range of techniques, from purely void random stitching to purely solid random stitching. Her representative works include the single-sided portrait of Deng Xiaoping entitled 82+1, the double-sided portrait embroidery The Ikeda Couple and the double-sided portrait embroidery in differing colours Charles and Diana.
