出身于木工世家，自幼随父学习木工技艺，17岁就能独立承建民间住宅，成为撑尺师傅，特别是维修古建筑的技术，在周边地区首屈一指。

第四批国家级非物质文化遗产项目雁门民居营造技艺代表性传承人。
雁门民居营造技师。
所掌握的木工建筑技艺，包括扇股麻花挑角技术及工艺、传统多层建筑梁架结构起重运料安装技术及工艺、明清古代建筑彩画塑像技术及工艺等等，既体现出传统建筑文化中坚固、实用、省料、美观的特点，又融合了现代建筑艺术的审美要求，在古建维修、复建、拆迁、装修等方面发挥重要作用。
在其言传身教下，杨氏木工子弟多达数十人。
同时，还向爱好者开办培训班。
