01 · Historical Records

The Jinbei (northern Shanxi) region preserves a considerable number of Liao-dynasty wooden structures, whose style forms a continuous line with that of Tang-dynasty architecture in our country—for example, deep and wide eaves, gently and heavily upturned roof corners, and large, solid timber components. The Yang family of carpenters in Daixian County is the inheritor of this region's traditional timber-framed building construction technique. Their ancestors were army carpenters who accompanied the Yang Family Generals of the Southern Song in guarding the Three Passes, specializing in making weapons, fortified villages, city gates, pass towers, martial temples, and bell-and-drum towers. Their traditional carpentry construction technique has been passed down from generation to generation to this day.

02 · Core Techniques & Process

The characteristics and construction techniques of these buildings exerted a profound influence on the later construction of traditional timber-framed buildings in the Jinbei region. Within Daixian County, the oldest surviving traditional timber-framed buildings constructed by the Yang family of carpenters—the Confucian Temple (Wenmiao) and the Bianjing Tower (Bianjing Lou)—have withstood over five hundred years of wind and rain and multiple earthquakes and other natural disasters, yet their major timber frames remain intact, fully demonstrating the excellence of their craftsmanship.

Fan-section twisted corner work

One of the inheritor's carpentry skills, braiding fan-shaped members into the projecting corner so the eave reaches far while staying massive.

Raising and setting the beam frame

Raising, transporting and fixing the beams of a multi-storey timber frame by manual winches and poles, the hardest part of great carpentry.

Ming-Qing polychromy and sculpture

Polychromy and sculpture for Ming-Qing style buildings, applied in repair, reconstruction, relocation and decoration.

The great timber frames of the Confucian Temple and Bianjing Tower

The oldest surviving timber buildings by the Yang carpenter family in Dai County, still structurally sound after five centuries and many earthquakes.

The Yang family carpenter lineage

The Yang carpenters of Dai County descend from the military carpenters who followed the Yang generals at the three passes and made weapons, forts and gates.

03 · Regional Records & Related Items

The Yanmen ancient building construction technique is distributed across Daixian County, a renowned historical and cultural city in northern Shanxi, and its surrounding areas; the famous Yanmen Pass lies within this region. The Yanmen Yang family has only fifteen apprentices. Under the impact of modern architectural art and interior decoration art, the market demand for traditional timber-framed buildings has gradually shrunk, and Yang Guitang and his disciples often have no choice but to rely on other means to make a living. The transmission of the highly locally distinctive traditional timber-framed building construction technique mastered by the Yang family now faces a crisis.

04 · Cultural Value & Contemporary Safeguarding

Yang Guitang (per official archive of the associated inheritor): Male, Han ethnicity, born January 1948, a native of Daixian County, Shanxi Province. Representative inheritor of the fourth national-level batch of the intangible cultural heritage item "Yanmen Dwelling Construction Technique." Construction technician of Yanmen dwellings. The carpentry construction skills he masters include the "fan-gu mahua" corner-lifting technique and craft, the hoisting, material-transporting, and installation technique and craft for the beam-frame structures of traditional multi-story buildings, and the colour-painting and statuary technique and craft for Ming–Qing ancient buildings, among others. These embody the characteristics of solidity, practicality, material economy, and beauty in traditional building culture, while also integrating the aesthetic requirements of modern architectural art, and play an important role in the repair, reconstruction, relocation, and decoration of ancient buildings. Under his personal instruction, the Yang family's carpentry disciples number as many as several dozen. At the same time, he also runs training classes for enthusiasts.
