Male, of Han ethnicity, born in October 1954 in Yuanmou County, Yunnan Province. From the age of seven or eight he followed local lantern societies in performances around the region, and at 12 he became a pupil of Pu Jilan, the celebrated traditional Huadeng artist of Yuanmou. By the age of 15 he could perform many traditional Huadeng plays, such as Zhang Guan Da Baishou (Magistrate Zhang's Grand Birthday Greetings) and Tan Gan Mei (Visiting the God-Sister).
