Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Male, of the Han ethnic group, born in May 1944 in She County, Anhui Province. He is a representative bearer of bonsai craftsmanship (Huizhou-school bonsai craftsmanship), a fifth-batch national intangible cultural heritage project. He was born into a family of Huizhou-school bonsai makers. His bonsai have a rigorous structure and a strong sense of movement, with well-judged spacing, seeking curvature within straightness and balance within irregularity, and they carry a strong scholarly air. He emphasises innovation and has broken through the traditional formats of Huizhou-school bonsai: he has remodelled the traditional three-tier bonsai and developed the traditional mixed wild-stock format, creating a modern naturalistic bonsai with an artistic personality of his own. Representative works include the plum bonsai Spring Filling Xin'an and Two Reds of Hongling, and the five-needle pine bonsai Step by Step to the Blue Clouds. He has trained a large number of outstanding Huizhou-school bonsai makers.
