Bonsai Craftsmanship
01 · Historical Records
According to tradition, Su-style penjing (tray landscape) originated in the Tang dynasty, flourished in the Ming, and reached maturity in the Qing. Through artistic processing and careful cultivation, it creates within a pot a beauty of image derived from nature and a beauty of conception loftier than nature, and it has gradually formed its distinctive style of refined elegance and antique simplicity.
02 · Core Techniques & Process
The principal materials of Su-style penjing modeling are tree stock, pots, palm fiber or aluminum wire, and the like; the main tools are scissors, wooden saws, and the like. Su-style penjing relies chiefly on native tree species. Its traditional model form is "six platforms, three supports, and one crown," and its technical core is "coarse binding and fine pruning, binding and pruning used together" and "pruning dominant, binding auxiliary." "Coarse binding" means binding and shaping with palm fiber or aluminum wire; it includes "full binding" and "half binding." Its most influential penjing works include "Huju longpan" (Crouching Tiger, Coiling Dragon; Sageretia theezans), "Weiran lu sihao" (Standing Tall in Company with the Four Whiteheads; cypress), "Qike nongshi" (Strange Branch Wielding Power; Chinese juniper), "Longfeng chengxiang" (Auspicious Dragon and Phoenix; Chinese juniper), and "Yizhi chengxiu" (A Single Branch Showing Its Beauty; elm).
Six platforms, three props, one crown
The classic Suzhou silhouette of six platforms, three props and one crown is built by coarse wiring with fine clipping, clipping taking precedence.
Coarse wiring, full and half
Coarse wiring with palm fibre or aluminium wire may be full or partial; the main materials are trees, pots and wire, the tools shears and saws.
Signature Suzhou works
Its best-known pieces include Tiger Crouching and Dragon Coiling in Chinese sweet plum and Towering Companions of the Four Hoary Sages in cypress.
Zhu Zhenqing's technical reforms
Born in 1953 into a bonsai family, Zhu Zhenqing shifted to metal-wire training and daily piece-by-piece clipping to achieve good foliage above and good bone below.
Native species and quiet elegance
Using chiefly native species, the Suzhou school took shape from Tang origins through Ming and Qing maturity into its quiet, antique elegance.

04 · Cultural Value & Contemporary Safeguarding
At present, with social development, the transmission and promotion of Su-style penjing is constrained by many factors, including the long creative cycle, scarcity of source material, difficulty of transmission, and a shortage of successors; protective measures need to be taken. Zhu Zhenqing (from the official archival record of the associated inheritor): Male, of the Han nationality, born in June 1953, from Suzhou, Jiangsu Province. Representative inheritor of the fifth national-level batch of the intangible cultural heritage project Penjing Craft (Su-style Penjing Craft). He comes from a penjing family: the grandson of Zhu Zi'an, a master of Chinese penjing art, and the son of Zhu Jinyuan, a master of penjing art. From childhood he was deeply influenced by Su-style penjing art. He is skilled at using tree species native to Suzhou and, through the Su-style methods of "coarse binding and fine pruning, binding and pruning used together," has produced richly varied penjing forms. While preserving the refined, elegant, antique simplicity characteristic of Su-style penjing, he has carried out technical innovations: for example, changing all-palm-fiber binding to "binding mainly with metal wire, with metal and palm binding used together," and changing "dormant-period pruning and growing-period arc pruning" to routine "bud removal with branch retention, section-by-section pruning, and meticulous fine trimming," achieving the effect of "viewing the foliage above and the framework below." He values the transmission of the craft and has trained a group of outstanding successors in penjing technique. His penjing works have repeatedly won gold and silver awards in Chinese penjing art competitions.
