A man of Han ethnicity, he was born in October 1949 in Hengshui, Hebei Province. He is an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and a doctoral supervisor. Inheriting his family's learning from childhood, he reclassified the medicines used in the treatment of collateral diseases through the ages and systematically constructed the system of pattern identification and treatment of collateral diseases. He advanced the ying-wei theory, the core of the vessel-collateral doctrine, founded a systematic theory for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disorders, and achieved major breakthroughs in suppressing acute cerebral infarction, arrhythmia, chronic heart failure and other diseases. He proposed cheng zhi tiao ping (restraining, controlling, regulating and balancing), the core theory of the qi-collateral doctrine, founded a systematic theory for the prevention and treatment of neuroendocrine-immune diseases, and made important progress in the prevention and treatment of neuromuscular diseases, malignant tumours and other conditions. He has led more than twenty national and provincial or ministerial research projects and published monographs including Collateral Disease Studies and On Vessels and Collaterals.

Honors & Recognition

He is a national representative bearer of traditional Chinese medical diagnostic and treatment methods (the collateral disease diagnostic and treatment method of Chinese medicine), a fifth-batch national intangible cultural heritage project. He has trained a large number of successors by supervising doctoral and master's students, taking on apprentices in the traditional master-disciple manner, and training trainees.
