01 · Historical Records

This therapy began in the late Qing dynasty and has been passed down through five generations, with a history of more than 150 years to the present day. The Ge family was originally from Penglai, Shandong; because their ancestors "braved the pass into the Northeast" (chuang guandong) and settled in Jinzhou, Liaoning, the first-generation founder Ge Xianbao practiced medicine in Shandong and founded the "Ge's Sinew-Pinching and Tapping Therapy"; it was passed to the third generation, Ge Changhai, who summarized it into a complete set of theory and hand techniques, and was later transferred to work in Beijing.

02 · Core Techniques & Process

Using the fingers to knead and a patting tool to tap the channels and sinews of specific parts of the body, the Ge's Sinew-Pinching and Tapping Therapy aims to move qi and activate blood and regulate the zang-fu organs, so as to strengthen the sinews and bones, harmonize qi and blood, and prevent and cure disease. Its theory derives from the sinew-channel doctrine of traditional Chinese medicine, and its treatment techniques originated in the ancient art of "daoyin anqiao" (guided pulling and pressing). Inheriting the cultural tradition of Chinese medicine, the therapy has formed a unique pulse-position theory and sinew-pinching and tapping techniques. The therapy is diverse in its hand techniques, simple and easy to practice, broad in indications, and reliable in efficacy, and its modes of transmission are open and diversified.

Locating points by the pulse-position system

Sites are marked along the sinew channels before any technique is applied, which is the distinguishing first step of the Ge method.

Kneading the sinews

Fingers work along the tendons with pressing, rolling and pinching, one hand fixing while the other advances, deepening in layers.

Beating

A purpose-made beater strikes along the mapped sites in a set rhythm and direction, worked together with kneading.

The Shaolin qigong beater

A purpose-built beater combining striking with exercise, designed by Ge Fenglin for use anywhere.

03 · Regional Records & Related Items

The Ge's Sinew-Pinching and Tapping Therapy has roots in both Jinzhou, Liaoning, and Penglai, Shandong: the family was originally registered in Penglai, and after their forebears "braved the pass into the Northeast" and settled in Jinzhou, Ge Xianbao practiced medicine in Shandong; it was not until the third generation, Ge Changhai, that the principles and techniques were systematized, after which he was transferred to Beijing. This craft took root in the Haidian area of Beijing with the clinical conditions of Beijing Shijitan Hospital Affiliated to Capital Medical University (formerly Beijing General Railway Hospital), becoming the most important site of transmission today, where theoretical organization and backbone training are completed. Ge Fenglin also created specialized implements such as the Shaolin Qigong Fitness Pat based on the sinew-channel doctrine and the art of daoyin anqiao, and lectured in the United States, Japan, and Singapore, turning techniques originally used only within the family into open teaching.

04 · Cultural Value & Contemporary Safeguarding

The Haidian District of Beijing has become the main area of transmission for the "Ge's Sinew-Pinching and Tapping Therapy". The therapy also faces problems such as changes in the medical and cultural atmosphere, some inheritors lacking licensed physician qualifications, the theory and techniques still needing further organization and summation, and limitations on training and transmission; protective measures need to be taken to enable its better transmission and development. Ge Fenglin (record of the associated inheritor's official archive): Male, Han ethnicity, born in June 1955, native of Jinzhou, Liaoning. Under the guidance of the sinew-channel doctrine and the "daoyin anqiao" technique, he continuously summarized and innovated in combination with clinical practice, forming a unique pulse-position theory and sinew-pinching and tapping techniques. He wrote works and papers including Manual Bone-Setting Techniques of Chinese Medicine, China's Ge's Sinew-Pinching and Tapping Therapy, and The Seven Great Principles of Ge's Bone-Setting. He is a representative inheritor of the fourth batch of national-level intangible cultural heritage project "Chinese Diagnostic Methods (Ge's Sinew-Pinching and Tapping Therapy)". He independently created the Shaolin Qigong Fitness Pat, a specialized tool for tapping therapy, and obtained a national patent. He has held numerous orthopedics training classes and was invited to lecture in the United States, Japan, Singapore, and other countries, training numerous Chinese orthopedics and traumatology doctors for all parts of China and Southeast Asia, including Ge Shaoxia, the fifth-generation inheritor.
