Li Hongyuan
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Male, Han ethnicity, born in 1937 in Yuxi, Yunnan. After joining the Yuxi Municipal Flower-Lantern Opera Troupe in 1955, Li Hongyuan studied under teachers including Xue Guoxing, Yang Jiongming and Ouyang Zhang, and served successively as instrumentalist and actor. He began composing lantern opera music in the 1960s, and from the 1970s onward worked full-time as composer and conductor. His compositions build on the inherited style of Yuxi lantern opera music while absorbing and integrating other musical material in a process of reform and development; his newly created melodies possess a rich lantern flavour and yet accord with the thoughts and feelings of the characters. His representative works include Mo Chou Nü (The Sorrowless Girl) and Jinyinhua, Zhuliba (Honeysuckle, Bamboo Fence).
