Sun Jiaxiang
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
A storyteller of Douzhenwan stories. From childhood she often heard her elders and neighbours tell stories, and because of her good memory and strong powers of verbal expression she gradually became a skilled storyteller of the area. Her language is vivid and carries a strong flavour of the Tujia dialect, and she is adept at exaggeration, dramatic rendering and the creation of suspense, so that her listeners are captivated. The more than five hundred folk tales she told are rich in content, full of wisdom and worth pondering, and include many laobazi, or tiger, stories bearing the imprint of Tujia culture. The stories are mostly built on a single storyline, yet there is no lack of plots with one branch from a main line or with multiple interwoven lines, and they have a distinctly feminine cultural character. In 1998 the Collection of Sun Jiaxiang's Stories was published. She was reported by more than a hundred media outlets and attracted wide social attention.
