01 · Historical Records

The Duzhenwan stories include oral narrative works of many types and subjects: the origin of the heavenly bodies, the earth, hills and rivers; the origin of man and livestock; legends of plants and animals; legends of immortals; legends of emperors; place-name legends; scenery legends; custom legends; and witty-figure stories, plant and animal stories, fantasy stories, spirit stories, stories of life, revolutionary stories, jokes and fables. They are distributed mainly in the Dujiachong, Shiwuxi, Zhuangxi and Longtanping areas of Duzhenwan in the Changyang Tujia Autonomous County of Hubei.

02 · Core Techniques & Process

The Duzhenwan stories have a rich national character and local flavour, especially the tiger stories among them, which preserve the distinctive imprint of traditional Tujia culture and attract attention. Some of the stories are Han stories that, in the telling, took in Tujia customs and became famous story types current throughout the world.

03 · Regional Records & Related Items

The Duzhenwan stories are distributed mainly in the Dujiachong, Shiwuxi, Zhuangxi and Longtanping areas of Duzhenwan in the Changyang Tujia Autonomous County of Hubei, transmitted chiefly through families and through society, with a rich national character and local flavour.

04 · Cultural Value & Contemporary Safeguarding

The story-tellers of Duzhenwan are not professional artists and do not transmit by master and disciple but chiefly through family and social transmission. The Duzhenwan stories have at once an entertaining and edifying function and very high historical and folkloric research value. Today most of the story-tellers are elderly and the chain of transmission is fairly fragile, so that effective protective measures urgently need to be taken.
