Lineage & School of Heritage

Raised in a musical family, he loved folk music from childhood and taught himself the suona and the touba (musical saw); at sixteen he was apprenticed to Xue Yinwang, sixth-generation bearer of the musicians' household of Dayang Town, to learn bayinhui skills.

Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire

Male, Han ethnicity, born in May 1954, a native of Zezhou County, Shanxi Province. He came from a family of opera performers; his mother Niu Xiaoming was a celebrated local actor. After decades of artistic discipline he is thoroughly versed in the instrumental music of the folk bayinhui, excelling above all in suona playing and especially in kaxi (vocal imitation): he can play through the nose, play two suonas against each other, and alternate with the kouqinzi (mouth organ), imitating human laughter and dialogue in kaxi with both natural and falsetto voice, greatly enriching the expressive range of Shangdang bayinhui wind music and establishing a style of his own. He has recovered and collated a large body of traditional folk qupai, formed the Dayang Bayinhui Art Troupe, and persisted in performing while training the next generation.
