Li Hongbin
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Male, of Han ethnicity, born in 1939 in Xiuyan Manchu Autonomous County, Liaoning Province. Li Hongbin's work is noted for its meticulous finish, with decoration carried through both inside and outside; his consummate technique of 'taking chains and setting rings in motion' (qulian huohuan) involves especially complex and exquisite procedures. In addition, 'drilling and hollowing the body' (dazuan taotang), 'making the shoulders and handles' (jianer zhizuo), and 'openwork pierced balls' (toudiao huoqiu) are also typical techniques of plain-style agate carving. Decorative carving is applied extensively in plain-style work, encompassing round carving, relief, openwork carving, and incised line engraving, while the stone's natural colors are exploited at well-chosen points to give the pieces greater variety. Representative works include Hua Xun (Flower Censer), Hua (Flower), and Liantiao Tingshi Lu (Chain Pavilion-Style Censer), among others.
