Fuxin Agate Carving
01 · Historical Records
The lotus-shaped cup, necklace of agate tubular beads, wine cups, and Go (weiqi) pieces unearthed from Liao dynasty tombs at Qinghemen in Fuxin date back 1,000 years. The present-day Baozhuyingzi Village in Qijiazi Township, Fuxin Mongol Autonomous County, received its name because the local prince presented a “Buddha-Light Agate Court Rosary” on the occasion of the Qianlong Emperor's sixtieth birthday. The Fuxin agate carving “Water Curtain Cave,” carved in 1974 under the direction of Premier Zhou Enlai, is now held in the National Museum of China.
02 · Core Techniques & Process
Fuxin City in Liaoning Province is one of China's four major agate-producing areas, and its agate carving craft is renowned at home and abroad. During the Qianlong reign of the Qing dynasty, most of the materials and craftsmanship for the agate ornaments and carvings used by the imperial court came from Fuxin. Agate is a mid-grade gemstone with a variety of natural colors and banded patterns, making it an ideal carving material. Agate has been praised as “jade gold”: the material itself lends itself to collection and holds or increases in value, and it is regarded as a symbol of beauty, happiness, auspiciousness, and wealth. Producing a fine agate jade article requires seven process steps: selecting the material, peeling off the outer skin, designing, polishing, rough carving, fine carving, and fitting the base. The Fuxin agate carving craft covers a complete range of categories, and its plain-vessel work (suhuo) leads the industry; techniques such as drilling out cavities, cutting chains with movable links, shaping shoulders and handles, openwork “living” balls, and decorative carving are its unique virtuoso skills.
