He studied under such renowned masters as Bao Chuanduo, Zheng Chuanjian and Ni Chuanyue and also received instruction from Zhou Chuanying. His range is broad, and he is accomplished in the sheng, mo and wai role types.

Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire

Male, of Han ethnicity, born in January 1948 in Nantong, Jiangsu Province. He is a National First-Class Performer and an expert who receives the special government allowance of the State Council. He has a solid artistic foundation and is versed in both civil and martial roles; his singing is vigorous and unrestrained, his articulation is clear, and his acting is sincere and natural, and he is adept at combining traditional technique with the delineation of character. He respects tradition and holds to a plain, restrained, refined and profound artistic style. His representative repertoire includes The Wine Tower (Jiu Lou), Drafting the Edict (Cao Zhao), Discussing the Sword (Yi Jian), Sweeping the Pine Needles (Sao Song) and Gazing Homeward (Wang Xiang). He has visited Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea and Finland, and has often travelled to Hong Kong and Taiwan to lecture and perform.

Honors & Recognition

National representative bearer of Kunqu Opera, a third-batch national intangible cultural heritage project. He was jointly granted the honorary title of Artist of Outstanding Achievement in Long-Term Dedication to the Art of Kunqu by UNESCO and the Ministry of Culture, and in 1992 he received the Ninth China Drama Plum Blossom Award. He teaches at professional opera schools in Shanghai and Jiangsu, training reserve talent.
