In 1958 he was admitted to the Northern Kunqu Opera Theatre, where he studied under masters including Shen Pansheng, Meng Xiangsheng and Wei Qinglin, and also learned from southern chou (comic) seniors such as Hua Chuanhao and Wang Chuansong, specializing in the comic role.

Male, Han ethnicity, born in October 1938 in Beijing. A National Class One actor. He was the leading wen chou (civil comic) actor of the Northern Kunqu Opera Theatre, and has been a member of the Chinese Dramatists Association and of the Artistic Committee of the Northern Kunqu Opera Theatre. He has taught chou performance at the Central Academy of Drama and the National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts. His representative works include Xiang Liang Ci Liang (Physiognomizing Liang and Stabbing Liang), Xia Shan (Descending the Mountain), Huo Zhuo (Capturing Alive), Zhao Jun Chu Sai (Zhaojun Beyond the Frontier), Zui Zao (Drunk in the Soap Workshop), Jie Xue (Borrowing the Boots), Feng Zheng Wu (The Kite Mistaken), Lu Lin (The Reed Marsh), Xue Jian Mei Ren Tu (The Blood-Stained Portrait of a Beauty) and Tao Hua Shan (The Peach Blossom Fan).
Honors & Recognition
National representative bearer of Kunqu Opera, a third-batch national intangible cultural heritage project. In 1985 he played Zhang Jizu in San Fu Ren (The Three Madams) and won the Performance Award at the Beijing New Repertoire Festival. In 1986 he played Zhang Wenyuan in Huo Zhuo (Capturing Alive) and won the Outstanding Supporting Actor Award at the Beijing Xiqu Joint Performance.
