04 · Cultural Value & Contemporary Safeguarding
The Bouyei pan songs touch many fields such as politics, economy, culture, society, ethics and primitive religion and vividly describe the distinctive psychological traits and emotional tendencies of the Bouyei; they are an important vehicle of Bouyei history and culture and may be said to be an unlettered encyclopaedia of the Bouyei, with precious cultural, historical and research value. Under the strong impact of modernisation and the influence of economic globalisation the transmitters of the Bouyei pan songs are ever fewer and those who sing them in the Bouyei language rarer still, so that this traditional folk song of a minority people is on the verge of dying out and urgently needs protection.
