Xinyi Boxing
01 · Historical Records
According to textual research, this boxing style was created in the last years of the Ming dynasty by Ji Jike of Shanxi, who adapted the techniques of the great spear into a boxing method. During the Qianlong reign of the Qing dynasty, Dai Longbang of Xiaohan Village in Qi County, Shanxi, received the transmission of this boxing. He then studied it with single-minded devotion and taught it widely to his clansmen and disciples, promoting the inheritance and refinement of Xinyi Liuhequan (Heart-Intent Six-Harmony Boxing).
02 · Core Techniques & Process
Xinyiquan (Heart-Intent Boxing), also known as Xinyi Liuhequan (Heart-Intent Six-Harmony Boxing), is a school of traditional martial arts. The Xinyiquan transmitted by the Dai family includes both unarmed boxing methods and weapons practice. In unarmed training, standing exercises such as the zhan dan form are taken as the foundation, and the boxing methods are characterized by generating outward force from within and driving the extremities from the root; by constructing forms out of circular movement so that attack and defense are freely deployed; by combining hardness with softness and accumulating softness into hardness; and by being plain and unadorned yet prized for its practicality. Its combative function lies in abundant force and vigorous qi, steady and powerful; internal and external in unity, with force issued together and fiercely; strikes delivered in every rise and fall, so that there is no point at which an attack cannot land.
Standing dan and other foundations
Standing dan and similar exercises lay the foundation before boxing technique, driving outward from within and from root to tip.

The Guangsheng escort agency

Dai family Xin Yi and Xingyi boxing
Li Luoneng's development of the Dai family art produced Xingyi boxing, so the older practice is now named after the Dai family.

The Dai family's Xinyiquan is centered on Xiaohan Village in Qi County and circulates through the villages and towns of the Jinzhong plain, including Qi County, Taigu, Pingyao, Wenshui, and Jiaocheng, where it was mostly taught in boxing halls, trading houses, and escort agencies in and around Qi County. The Guangsheng Escort Agency founded by Dai Longbang, while guarding merchants on the road, honed the offensive and defensive techniques of Xinyi Liuhequan into their mature form, and his disciple Li Luoneng went on to found Xingyiquan. For this reason the branch in Qi County today calls itself Dai's (or Dai-style) Xinyiquan in order to distinguish itself from Xingyiquan and from the Xinyiquan of Henan and elsewhere. The inheritor Mu Jinqiao established the Dai's Xinyiquan Teaching Institute and organized the publication of the Dai's Xinyiquan Routine Competition Rules and the Dai's Xinyiquan Boxing Manual.

04 · Cultural Value & Contemporary Safeguarding
Its value for physical fitness lies in guiding and leading the internal qi so as to relax the sinews and activate the collaterals, while alternating practice of left and right keeps the postures balanced. Dai Longbang once founded the Guangsheng Escort Agency; in the course of protecting merchants he both realized the defensive and offensive value of martial arts and promoted the development and refinement of the offensive and defensive techniques of Xinyi Liuhequan. Through the efforts of successive generations of practitioners, the Xinyiquan transmitted by Dai Longbang developed considerably. His disciple Li Luoneng further compiled, on the basis of Xinyi Liuhequan, the Xingyiquan that is widely practiced today. In order to distinguish the Xinyiquan transmitted by Dai Longbang from Xingyiquan and from other Xinyiquan schools, present-day practitioners refer to Dai Longbang's method of practice as Dai's Xinyiquan or Dai-style Xinyiquan. Mu Jinqiao (recorded in the official file of the associated inheritor): Male, Han ethnicity, born in January 1955, a native of Qi County, Shanxi Province. Since childhood he was deeply devoted to martial arts. At the age of thirteen he took Duan Xian as his teacher, studying the boxing methods of Xinyiquan and the secret art of acupoint striking, and received the complete authentic transmission. He has fully mastered the internal-training principles and the routines of Xinyiquan, and is able, on the basis of boxing theory and in combination with practice methods, to grasp the expression of the points of force in each movement, from the inside outward and from the top downward, and in particular the integration of body method, hand technique, and footwork. He attaches great importance to the transmission of the art: he established the Dai's Xinyiquan Teaching Institute, trained large numbers of disciples, cooperated with television stations to film instructional videos, and brought Xinyiquan into the classroom of the martial arts association of Beijing Polytechnic College. He has also carried out systematic research on Dai's Xinyiquan, publishing articles in journals such as Wulin, Boji, and Zhonghua Wushu, and organizing the publication of books including the Dai's Xinyiquan Routine Competition Rules and the Dai's Xinyiquan Boxing Manual. He is a representative inheritor of Xinyiquan, a project of the fifth national-level batch of intangible cultural heritage.
