01 · Historical Records

Since ancient times the sons and daughters of northern Tibet have tilled the plateau with their industry and wisdom, creating rich and varied ethnic and folk culture and art, of which the Tibetan nomadic oral literature is the most brilliant page. From the moment the Tibetan forebears opened up the Qinghai-Tibet plateau the Tibetan nomadic oral literature came into being, transmitting the wisdom, experience and joys and sorrows of the ancestors from generation to generation, becoming a genetic factor for living in harmony with heaven and earth, gods and ghosts and nature, entering the blood and the depths of the nomadic people's hearts and becoming a way of life and a philosophy of survival. The more famous Jiali Tibetan folk stories include Beiqiong, The Upper Ri Xi Ri Ga and the Lower Ri Xi Ri Ma, The King, the Minister and the Beggar's Three Sons, King Lagu Zanbu and King Tugu Zanbu and The Demon King Jiayu Ganggang. Because his telling of the Beiqiong story was vivid and wonderful and beyond compare, people gave him the affectionate title Beiqiong, meaning little frog.

03 · Regional Records & Related Items

The Jiali folk stories take Jiali county in the Tibet Autonomous Region as their core area of circulation and have fairly great influence in the nomadic area of northern Tibet; the more famous include Beiqiong, The Upper Ri Xi Ri Ga and the Lower Ri Xi Ri Ma, The King, the Minister and the Beggar's Three Sons, King Lagu Zanbu and King Tugu Zanbu and The Demon King Jiayu Ganggang.

04 · Cultural Value & Contemporary Safeguarding

The content of these folk stories touches the origin of the Tibetan, the wars between gods and demons, the contest of wisdom between men and ghosts and the transition of the Tibetan forebears from a hunting to a pastoral society, full of marvellous colour and imagination; they are a striking expression of the traditional culture of the Tibetan nomads and contain their spirit, belief and value orientation. Though baptised by several thousand years of Buddhist culture, they still preserve the distinctive character and important core values of the nomadic age, with fairly great influence in the vast nomadic areas, especially the nomadic zone of northern Tibet, and special value for studying the remote nomadic culture of the Tibetan.
