Wood Carving
01 · Historical Records
The formation of Caoxian wood carving is directly tied to local demand for funerary sacrifices and for marriage furniture. Caoxian lies at the junction of eight counties across Shandong and Henan provinces and has since ancient times been a gathering place for commerce and trade, where timber was easy to obtain and joinery became a local habit; from the late Qing into the early Republic the Caocheng town area was lined with carpenters' shops, and the carved decoration of furniture, inscribed boards, screens, spirit shrines, coffins and sacrificial altars mostly issued from the hands of the same body of artisans, so wood carving became an indispensable craft for village funerals and festival adornment.
02 · Core Techniques & Process
Caoxian wood carving is a traditional carving craft circulating in Caoxian County, Heze City, Shandong Province; by the Qing dynasty it had already become quite prevalent. Caoxian is located in southwestern Shandong, at the junction of eight counties of Shandong and Henan provinces; it lies in a warm-temperate monsoon continental climate zone, with four distinct seasons, abundant rainfall and fertile soil. The locality produces abundant timber, laying a good foundation for the development of the wood-carving craft. Caoxian wood carving is a distinctive art form of wood carving created by the local people to meet the needs of production, daily life and sacrifice, and it has pronounced folk characteristics. Its common raw materials include pear wood, persimmon wood, jujube wood, paulownia, poplar and sandalwood, with different woods used for different purposes. Its decorative patterns are extremely varied, centered on auspicious and propitious content. Its techniques include suspended carving, openwork carving, relief, round carving and flat carving. The process of Caoxian wood carving mainly includes preparing the material, cutting the stock, tracing the pattern from a model, making the blank, rough carving, finishing the surface and fine carving. Its making requires practiced skill and artistic insight: the patterns come entirely from the artisan's imagination, emphasizing shaping the form through conception, with the idea preceding the blade. The carving is done in one continuous flow, with clean, decisive cuts — long lines fluent and smooth, short lines crisp and rhythmic; the images are simple and lively, the forms true to life, revealing refinement within plainness and elegance within the popular. Caoxian wood carving covers a rich range of types, including everyday decorative objects such as furniture, inscribed boards and screens, as well as funerary and sacrificial goods such as spirit shrines, coffins and sacrificial altars. Its representative works include the openwork Cloud Dragon Plays with a Pearl, the brush pot Plum Blossom, Orchid, Bamboo and Chrysanthemum, and the mooncake mold Three Stars Visit the Moon Palace. Caoxian wood carving is transmitted by family teaching and apprenticeship, and has now passed through six generations. As a product of traditional history and culture, Caoxian wood carving is a concentrated expression of the spirit of traditional culture; it reflects the local people's fervent desire to remember their ancestors, love life and pursue beautiful things, and is important material for the study of traditional folk culture.
