Sun Shuchun studied under Liu Shoushan, a renowned contemporary physician of orthopedics, and gained a profound understanding of imperial-court bone-setting. While inheriting his teacher's experience, he extensively absorbed the strengths of famous physicians from all parts of the country, applied modern knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology to standardize and systematize their techniques, and, on the basis of preserving their efficacy, simplified and refined the manipulations, truly realizing the essential aim of bone-setting and tuina, that 'the mechanism is triggered externally, ingenuity is born internally, the hand follows the turn of the mind, and the method issues from the hand.' His manipulations emphasize acting in accordance with the situation, combining hardness with softness, and taking softness as the dominant element.
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
A man of the Han ethnicity, he was born in 1939 in Li County, Hebei. Sun Shuchun attaches great importance to the internal treatment methods of traditional Chinese medicine for orthopedic and traumatic diseases; while applying manipulative therapy, he combines it with pattern-based treatment using Chinese medicinal formulas. The national-level new drugs 'Yaotong Granules' and 'Yaobitong Capsules,' for which he served as the principal developer, have been widely used and have produced significant economic and social benefits. He currently undertakes four research projects at the national and the provincial or ministerial level. His published works include Liu Shoushan's Experience in Bone-setting (Liu Shoushan Zhenggu Jingyan), the Practical Color Atlas of Tuina Manipulations (Shiyong Tuina Shoufa Caise Tupu), the Atlas of Chinese Medical and Health-Care Tuina (Zhongguo Yiyao Baojian Tuina Tupu), and Clinical Traumatology and Orthopedics (Linchuang Gushang Kexue).
Honors & Recognition
A national representative bearer of TCM Bone-setting Therapy, a first-batch national intangible cultural heritage project; chief researcher, chief physician, and doctoral supervisor at the Orthopedics and Traumatology Hospital of the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences; and member of the National Drug Evaluation Committee. In 1993 he received the special government allowance of the State Council.
